Compost, Soil & Mulch
Good mix = fewer problems. Aim for structure, drainage, and steady moisture.
Reliable Container Mix (Baseline)
- 60% peat-free multi-purpose compost
- 30% fine bark or wood fibre
- 10% perlite or grit
- Slow-release fertiliser (10–12 weeks)
Heavy feeders: add 5–10% worm castings or 2–4% biochar pre-charged with liquid feed.
Drainage vs Retention
If pots stay soggy
- Increase perlite/grit to 15–20%.
- Add more bark; use pot feet.
If pots dry in a day
- Blend in 10% coir or fine bark.
- Mulch surface 2–3 cm.
Mulch Options
| Mulch | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fine bark | Most containers | Clean look; reduces splash and weeds. |
| Straw | Tomatoes, courgettes | Keeps fruit clean; check for slugs. |
| Coco chips | Dry balconies | Long-lasting; light weight. |
| Grit | Lavender, rosemary | Improves crown dryness for med herbs. |
Refreshing Tired Compost
- Remove roots; mix in one-third fresh compost and a handful of slow-release feed.
- Add 5% worm castings for biology.
- For disease issues (blight/mildew), replace more and clean pots/stakes.
